Do’s and Don’ts for Setting Up a Safe Baby Nursery

Setting up a baby nursery is an exciting task, but safety should always come first. Here are key do’s and don’ts to guide you through creating a safe and comfortable space for your little one:

Do’s:

1. Choose a Firm Mattress

A firm baby mattress is essential for your baby's sleep safety. A firm surface helps reduce the risk of suffocation and SIDS. Learn more about the importance of a firm mattress in our blog "The Importance of a Firm Mattress for Baby Sleep". Make sure the mattress fits snugly into the crib with no gaps larger than two fingers between the mattress and crib edges.

2. Use Breathable, Non-Toxic Materials

When selecting crib bedding and room décor, prioritize materials that are breathable, hypoallergenic, and free of harmful chemicals like phthalates or flame retardants. Babies are highly sensitive to toxins, and safer materials help maintain healthy indoor air quality.

3. Ensure Proper Crib Spacing

Follow crib safety guidelines. The crib bars should be no more than 6 cm apart to prevent your baby from getting stuck, and the crib should be free from sharp edges or loose hardware. Regularly check the crib for signs of wear.

4. Position the Crib Safely

Place the crib away from windows, curtains, or blinds to prevent entanglement or strangulation hazards. Also, ensure that nearby furniture doesn’t provide a climbing path out of the crib.

Don’ts:

1. Avoid Soft Bedding

While soft blankets and pillows may look cozy, they pose a suffocation risk for infants. Stick to a firm, well-fitted sheet over the mattress. Also, avoid plush toys, bumpers, and other soft items in the crib.

2. Don’t Use Drop-Side Cribs

Drop-side cribs are no longer considered safe due to the risk of entrapment and have been banned in many countries. Ensure that your crib meets the latest safety standards.

3. Don’t Forget About Baby-Proofing the Room

While most parents focus on the crib, the entire room should be baby-proofed. Ensure that electrical outlets are covered, furniture is anchored to the wall, and cords from baby monitors or other devices are out of reach.

4. Skip Overheating the Room

Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so it’s important not to overheat the nursery. Keep the room at a comfortable temperature between 20–22°C, and dress your baby appropriately for the season.
