Why mattress reviews are hard to trust
A mattress is one of the few big purchases you make without really trying it. You lie on it for a few minutes in a shop, or not at all if you buy online, and then you live with it for years. So most people lean on reviews.
The trouble is that reviews are easy to game. Some are written in exchange for free products or discounts. Some sit on a brand's own website, where the brand decides what stays up. And some belong to a mattress model launched only a few months ago, so nobody has slept on it long enough to know how it holds up.
Five ways to tell if a mattress review is real
- Check where it's posted. Reviews on Google are harder to control than testimonials on a brand's own site, because the brand can't delete the ones it doesn't like.
- Look at the volume. A handful of glowing reviews tells you little. Hundreds of reviews built up over several years give you a fairer picture.
- Check the dates. Reviews spread across many years mean the product has been around long enough to be properly tested.
