What is J-Foam?

The Joey Mattress is made with J-Foam™️, a polyurethane foam blend that our founders created after months of research and development with top Malaysian mattress specialists.

What Exactly is Polyurethane Foam?

Polyurethane is a kind of synthetic polymer, which is a type of plastic. It is derived from petroleum oil. Polyurethane foam is polyurethane that has an open cellular structure.

This video provides a scientific explanation of how the building blocks of polyurethane work:

Types of Polyurethane

Flexible Polyurethane Foam (FPF)

Used as cushioning for commercial products like furniture, bedding, packaging, and car interiors. This is the kind of polyurethane that's very satisfying to squish. Prime Instagram #satisfyingposts material.

Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, and Elastomers (CASE)

Polyurethane coating enhances a product's appearance and lengthens its lifespan because of its strong bonding properties, and that it provides quality airtight seals. Ever wondered how a car's coating holds up for years against our tropical (crazy hot, crazy wet) Malaysian weather? It is because polyurethane coating is protecting the car.

Rigid Polyurethane Foam

This kind of polyurethane is widely used as insulation for homes in Western countries. It has properties that help with maintaining the internal temperature of a house, and also with lowering noise levels in homes. Most construction companies use a mix of rigid polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foam for insulation in roofs, walls, doors, and windows.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)

TPU is flexible, elastic, and resistant to impact, abrasion, and weather wear-and-tear. It's used for making products such as shampoo bottles, toys, sports equipment, and even shoes. Cool fact: TPU can also be recycled!

Reaction Injection Molding (RIM)

RIM is a process where two liquid components are mixed under high-pressure impingement and then injected into a mould. The liquids then react and form a polyurethane which takes the shape of that mould. The bumper that protected your car when that uncle/aunty tak guna signal and then suddenly turned into your lane? That car bumper was made through this RIM process.

Benefits of Using Polyurethane in Furniture-Making

Flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) that is used in furniture and carpet cushioning is called slabstock.

FPF is widely used in this industry because it is:

  • Durable
  • Resilient
  • Absorbs tension and energy
  • Supportive
  • Comfortable
  • Has good thermal regulative properties
  • Is recyclable

Polyurethane and J-Foam™️

Joey and Winson, the founders of Joey Mattress, did their research and found that they wanted the mattress to have these characteristics. So, they decided that FPF was the perfect material for the Joey Mattress. They used polyurethane as a base material but did their own R&D, tweaked some minor components, and came up with an in-house blend (unique to Joey Mattress Sdn. Bhd) that makes up the J-Foam™️. This signature polyurethane blend is what makes up Malaysia's new favourite mattress!

Now that you're an informed consumer, see if the Joey Mattress is right for you.
